The CEN/ISSS Cultural Diversity Focus Group has the pleasure to invite you to a Brainstorming Session on Keyboards at the CEN Meeting Centre in Brussels (36 rue de Stassart) open to all interested parties.
The purpose of the session is to discuss the development of character sets and keyboards for European languages to meet evolving requirements to enable users to type text, in particular names, in other languages than their own. Possible topics for discussion include, but are not limited to:
- Character requirements and legal concerns (not country specific);
- Current standards and hardware and software implementations;
- Different approaches for extensions of keyboards;
- Precomposed or decomposed characters in code generation;
- Potential rules for intuitive multilingual keyboard layouts.
The meeting will start in the morning with (at least) the following short presentations:
Marc Wilhelm Küster, University of Applied Sciences Worms: Character requirements and legal concerns; character_requirements_and_legal_concerns.pdf ;
John Murphy, Microsoft European Development Centre: Current standards and hardware and software implementations; keyboard_layouts_on_microsoft_windows.ppt ;
Karl Ivar Larsson, Consultant: Swedish views on lingually-extended keyboard layouts cdfg_pres.pdf ;
Erkki I. Kolehmainen, Consultant, Cultural Diversity Issues in ICT: A design approach to regional, multilingual keyboard layouts for Europe. Finnish_multilingual_keyboard_design_principles_v1.ppt

All participants are very much invited to present their views also in short (ca. 20 minutes) position papers. Please notify us in advance of the meeting if you plan to present a paper. The bulk of the afternoon is reserved for discussions and a general exchange of ideas on the topic. The brainstorming session may then be able to agree on some strategic recommendations, which could be brought forward to the relevant international, European and national fora for further consideration.
