Background

The Wien initiative "Sonderzeichen" goes back to a workshop under the umbrella of the 5th working meeting of German-language dictionaries edited by academies (5. Arbeitstreffen deutschsprachiger Akademiewörterbücher) in Vienna on June 9th, 2006 (http://www.oeaw.ac.at/dinamlex/Tagung2006.html). The aim of this initiative is on the one hand to promote the consideration of special characters of lexicographic relevance which are currently missing from the UCS, and on the other hand to document defined characters of lexicographic relevance that are still missing in commercial fonts, in order to show their existence e.g. to font manufacturers and to apply for named character sequences.

The workshop was organized by Hubert Bergmann and Eveline Wandl-Vogt, both staff-members of the Institute of Lexicography of Austrian Dialects and Names (Institut für Österreichische Dialekt- und Namenlexika; I DINAMLEX) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften). A keynote-speech on the UCS and its importance for lexicographic editions in the internet age held by Marc Wilhelm Küster (FH Worms) was followed by two presentations dealing with practical aspects of special characters of two dictionary projects (Maik Lehmberg, Niedersächsisches Wörterbuch and Hubert Bergmann / Eveline Wandl-Vogt, Wörterbuch der bairischen Mundarten in Österreich).
